Is God Providing? What joy there is for a woman in giving birth to her child. I can only guess her feelings. What a blessing for the family. When I performed my first delivery- a girl in Guadalajara, Mexico- I spontaneously cried with joy. ( I tried my best to hide the tears from my professor and the nurses in the delivery room.) It was such an honor to share this miraculous moment with a wonderful lady and her husband- campesinos, who came to the medical school hospital on foot from a distant village in the State of Jalisco to be assured that their baby would have a good chance at life. Have you noticed that almost involuntarily a woman sees a cute toddler in a public place and she immediately smiles, the “maternal” instinct filled with happiness.

Part of our genetic code mandates that we promulgate. We are constructed to create more of our species and to populate this world that we live in. Although there have been changes in our society as to how it is constructed (man and wife, wife and wife, man and man, just man, just woman), the family unit is still (or should be) in the industrialized world the centerpiece for protecting and developing our children in preparation for adulthood so that they can go on to procreate and assure survival of humanity. Most religions encourage procreation and some frown upon the sexual act (intercourse) without the express intent of conception. I am not going to venture into an argument one way or the other about what God has told these religious leaders because I have never heard from God directly. Communications with God is tricky because each religion seems to think that they are the ONLY ones that speak to God and have heard His/Her word. I have many dear friends and each one, believes that THEIR religion is the ONLY word of God. I admit to being confused- so many options!

I have to take a DEEP breath, gather up my courage today, knowing full well that I will face a barrage of criticism and scorn but what can I do? At some point you have to be true to yourself- not just live a lie. I’m a married man with two kids but here goes…………….. I have for my whole life consumed milk and milk products of another species- cows. I love ice cream and malted milks and creamy cheeses and like many of you I put half and half in my coffee. I have listened to patients describe their diets filled with milk and milk products. But I can’t take it anymore. I believe that milk and milk products are NOT healthy and I am taking a stand recommending that my patients REFRAIN from consuming milk products as I have done PERIOD !!!!!!! I admit that I have wondered why we consume milk products and have had great concern as to WHY we are the ONLY species that consumes the milk of another species! I do not see the particular health benefits. It is not natural.

ObesityI am in London right now and one thing that is noticeable is that while there are obese people, there are noticeably fewer. The most recent data available shows about 26% of English are obese while nearly 36% of Americans are obese. Obesity, a term we throw around a lot is defined by a weight of 20% or more of one’s ideal weight. To be sure there are more variables, how much muscle mass you have, etc., but, this is a good enough number to use. Even though there is “just” a 10% difference between how fat we are and how fat the English are it IS noticeable. What surprises me is why the difference is only 10%.

In London, people get around by walking and using the fantastic public transportation system they have. They use bicycles more than we do. They don’t typically go the grocery and stock up, but, purchase foods in smaller amounts and carry them home by foot. Most local groceries have no parking lots attached. Food is much more costly than in the U.S. – even if adjusted for currency and salary differences between the U.S. and U.K.

blog061512-1There is NO doubt that we are too fat as a nation. We eat too much, drink too much of sugary beverages and consume foods that are DEFINITELY bad for one’s health- fats, beef, fried everything, high carbohydrates, pesticides, contaminants, antibiotic filled etc. This leads to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, birth defects, high costs of health care, premature deaths and so much suffering. Let’s not minimize the issue.

Mayor Bloomberg, trim and apparently fit, sees this oh so well and his answer is to begin to CONTROL what individually we cannot control- our appetite for soda which by some accounts is responsible for 7% of the obesity in the U.S. (Whether this is an accurate number or how that number has been reached, I have not a clue !) He, using his power over restaurants, fast food outlets, etc. that are licensed by the City of New York, has proposed to ban 16 oz. and up sodas from being sold in these facilities.

SurgeryI advise my patients who are planning surgery to quit supplements and any natural product- even natural teas at least a week or 10 days BEFORE surgery. Natural products are biologically active and COULD adversely affect your surgery and its outcome. Excessive bleeding is a big concern. I do not think that we really know to what extent supplements and natural products can play a detrimental role before, during or after surgery, but why would you take the risk? Here are some commonly used natural products that you should be very cautious about when going for surgery:

(I have taken these lists from NaturalDataBase.com- a very reliable source of information about nutritional supplements and herbs. Their work is very impressive. This is not hearsay data, but from a team of skilled pharmacists and other professionals.) These lists just give you an idea of what might occur. DO NOT assume that if you do not see your supplement or herb here that you are home free- no way!
